REVIEW: A Little Pillow Company Children's Pillow

My daughter started asking for a pillow around her 2nd birthday. We managed to hold off on actually buying one until she was almost 2.5, which turned out to be extremely fortunate because it actually took me a full six months to find a pillow that I felt comfortable enough actually giving to her. I must have gone through at least a half dozen options, either because they were too lumpy or didn’t hold up well in the washing machine. After just one wash, the vast majority of them either completely migrated all of their “feathers” to one side or became so fluffy that your head physically would roll off it and onto the mattress. I was starting to come to the conclusion that this was just how children’s pillows were made and I was just going to have to deal with it – until I found A Little Pillow Company.

One night, I was on page 6 of 7 search results for “toddler pillow” when I came across the company’s listing. Not confident that anything past page 2 on Amazon was worth anything, I continued scrolling by until the words “made in the USA” caught my eye. I clicked the link and read the description. I was immediately impressed because the description was written in perfect English (rather than by Google Translate), which turned out to be because the company is based in Virginia and has been around since 2007.

I must have been feeling sociable that night, because something prompted me to email their customer service team to ask whether my 2.5-year-old – who had never had a pillow before – could actually use an 18m+ pillow if we wanted lower loft, or whether there was a medical reason as to why she should go with the older-age one. Imagine my surprise when, just a few hours later, I received an email back from their co-founder, giving me a ton of info and suggestions based on the fact that my daughter is a stomach sleeper. After that, I knew I had to give it a try, and both I and my daughter are really happy we did.

A Little Pillow Company Pillow – The Pros:

  • The company’s based in the USA, with each item being hand-sewn by a small team of real people.
  • If you’re into saving the earth, everything they make is earth-friendly and they even have a line of organic products; in fact, they claim to make the most earth-friendly pillow ever created.
  • You have the option of using it with or without a pillowcase (sold separately), which may sound nasty but the pattern is so cute and soft that while we do use a pillowcase on ours, it’s not an eye sore if you choose not to.
  • When it’s time to clean it, just throw the pillow in the wash on any cycle and then dry it in the machine. If you want less loft, slap it against your leg a couple times, and if you want more loft, squish it together a couple times.
  • My daughter LOVES this thing. There was a point where she would ask to take it downstairs with her because she and the pillow had formed a “friendship bond.” I think she finds it comforting, and I feel good that it’s not a crazy-high loft where I worry about it damaging her spine while she sleeps.
  • I don’t usually factor in the customer service aspect of a product when I review it (case in point here), but it was such a positive one that I really felt like I was making a good choice in purchasing it, which luckily turned out to be true.
  • They keep introducing new designs so you shouldn’t have any issues finding a style you like.
  • The fill is adjustable, which means you can add extra (sold separately) if you like it higher or remove some if you prefer a lower loft.
  • They’ve also recently come out with a few new products, including cute throw pillows and an organic “omni” pillow that can be used as a neck, eye or body pillow for kids and adults.

A Little Pillow Company – The Cons:

  • ** Updated 9/7/20: this has been fixed!! ** I did PR in a past life, so this one’s easy: they need to market themselves better. Their Amazon listings don’t even say their company name until you click on it, and it’s very easy to confuse them with yet another non-US-based company unless you’re as crazy as I am. I don’t know if that’s an easy fix like just relabeling product titles or whether it involves paying Amazon to get ranked higher in search results, but they’ve got to do something.
  • Some may argue that the price is higher than others on the market, and that’s true – but the value is well worth it, in my opinion.

In Closing:

If you’re looking for a high-quality, earth-friendly children’s pillow that won’t fall apart after a few washes, A Little Pillow probably has something that’s right for you. As is the case with all pillows, make sure you THOROUGHLY dry it because there’s always a risk of developing mold if you don’t. I don’t foresee that ever happening with these, but figured it was worth mentioning since it’s easy to forget.

And if you’re serious about buying, I highly recommend checking out their company website first, as there are some useful articles about how to pick the right size for your child – or you can send them an email with your unique question because (shockingly) they actually respond!
